note from a long lost person
I just renewed contact with one of my ex-students back when I was doing relief teaching. No names: re the Sunday Times article on teachers and blogs. Irregardless of the fact tt I was teaching them 3 years ago, but the internet is a scary place; and blogs can be found simply by typing in keywords using the search option!
He was a student from my n(a) class, and I stumbled to his blog via another of his classmate's blog. Reading about what's been going on in his life made me smile with pride. The boy has gone from a heck-care attitude to a councillor within three years! I was amazed at the way he writes too - its rather fluent and untypical of a 16 year old student. I sent him an email, and he replied within an hour...we added each other to our msn list and he came to talk to me, giving me updates on what has happened to the class in these few years.
Talking to him and looking at their class photos made me feel a teeny bit nostalgic for the past, when I was a relief teacher and the students all [well, most of them, anyway] loved me - they gave me tiny presents and precious handwritten notes when they knew tt I was leaving the school. These small gestures could make teaching a worthwhile career; when you're able to reach out to these students and make them love you, and touch their lives for a period of time.
I know Mr Leong and Ms Lim did touch my life for the short time tt they were in it. (:
Regardless on how much I've been protesting abt how teaching is not my cup of tea, I *think* I wld just submit an application to NIE. I guess teaching is not all about imparting knowledge, but also about getting involved in the lives of little ones, and making a difference to them.
Hearing my ex-student mention abt how wonderful and pretty his teachers are made me realize.... I hope that someday, someone will also say the same of me. Ok maybe the pretty part is rather shallow, but I'm more for the wonderful part.
*hmm* I think MOE shld take this blog entry of mine to inspire other wannabe teachers! (:
On another note, been feeling unwell today. Woke up with the standard fever, bodyaches and headaches tt make me want to chop my head off. I'm not even sure if I'll be able to make it to tml's project meeting. -sigh-
